Language Nerds Do Earth

50: Weddings

Hi guys! We’re back after our summer and fall hiatus for a fascinating episode on weddings!

This week we take a deep dive into weddings around the world, starting in Romania and going to South Korea, India, China, Ireland, and Swaziland. We were also graced with the presence of three wonderful women: Simona from Romania, Vinney from China, and Venetia from South Africa. A huge thanks to all three women who took time out of their days to give us and our listeners a little peek into weddings from their cultures!

In language news this week, it turns out that grammatical gender puts a filter on the way speakers of those languages perceive the objects. This language news was VERY cool so be sure to check it out from Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/culture-conscious/201209/masculine-or-feminine-and-why-it-matters

For the full version of Venetia’s description of weddings in Swaziland’s traditional culture, check out the audio below!
